What Whois is for
Whois is the oldest way to find out who owns a domain name or an IP block. The zone registry stores the registrar, creation and expiry dates, domain statuses and DNS server addresses, and our tool queries them directly over the Whois protocol (TCP port 43).
- Before buying a domain — check that the name is available or find out when its registration expires.
- During a transfer — check that the domain has no
clientTransferProhibitedlock and the registrar is correct. - After changing DNS — make sure the registry already sees the new name servers.
- For IP addresses — find the provider, country and abuse contact.
Why some data is hidden
Since GDPR, most registrars hide the owner’s name, phone and address. To contact them, an anonymized email or the registrar’s web form is usually provided. A more structured answer comes from the RDAP lookup.
