What traceroute shows
Packets on the internet pass through dozens of routers. Traceroute sends packets with an increasing TTL: each router along the way decrements it by one and reports back when it reaches zero. This builds a list of hops with the response time of each.
When it helps
- A site loads slowly or drops out now and then — a traceroute shows at which hop latency grows.
- You need to understand which providers and countries traffic to a server passes through.
- You’re contacting support — a traceroute result helps engineers find the cause faster.
The route is traced from the MEVCORE data center. If the problem is only on your side, run tracert (Windows) or traceroute (Linux, macOS) on your computer and attach the result to a ticket.
