Which certificate do you need
All certificates encrypt traffic equally securely. They differ in what exactly the certificate authority verifies and how many domains they protect.
DV — domain validation
Confirms only domain ownership. Issued in minutes and suited to blogs, landing pages and business card sites.
OV — organization validation
The certificate authority verifies the company. The organization name appears in the certificate, which increases trust in the service.
EV — extended validation
The strictest verification of a legal entity. Chosen by banks, payment services and large online stores.
Wildcard

Why a website needs an SSL certificate
SSL (more precisely, TLS) encrypts the connection between the browser and the server. Without it, passwords, forms and payment data are sent in plain text.
Security, trust and search
Modern browsers mark sites without HTTPS as “Not secure”, and some features — geolocation, notifications, HTTP/2 — work only over a secure connection. Search engines treat HTTPS as one of their ranking signals.
For online stores and sites with sign-up forms, a certificate is mandatory: without it, payment systems won’t let you accept payments and visitors won’t leave their details.
Free or commercial certificate
Let’s Encrypt encrypts just as securely as paid certificates and suits most websites. It’s valid for 90 days, so on MEVCORE hosting it renews automatically.
Commercial OV and EV certificates are needed when it’s important to verify the organization itself: the company name is visible in the certificate, and the certificate authority provides a financial warranty. Wildcard and multi-domain certificates make it easier to maintain many subdomains.
