Official transliteration
Ukraine has a single official transliteration table, approved by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 55 of 27 January 2010. It is used for names in international passports and driving licences, and for place names on road signs and maps.
Special rules
- Є, Ї, Й, Ю, Я at the start of a word are written as Ye, Yi, Y, Yu, Ya, and elsewhere as ie, i, i, iu, ia: Юрій — Yurii, Їжакевич — Yizhakevych.
- Зг is written as zgh so it isn’t confused with the sound “ж” (zh): Згорани — Zghorany.
- The soft sign and the apostrophe are dropped: Знам’янка — Znamianka.
- Г is h, and Ґ is g.
URL mode
The “For URLs” mode produces a page address of lowercase Latin letters and hyphens — for a blog post or an online store product, for example. Such addresses are easy to read and are indexed well by search engines. You can build your site on our WordPress hosting.
