Why Punycode is needed
DNS has historically supported only Latin letters, digits and hyphens. To make domains in Cyrillic and other scripts (IDN) work, they are converted to a special ASCII form — Punycode — with the xn-- prefix. For example, приклад.укр looks like xn--80aaxitdbjk.xn--j1amh in DNS.
When you need to convert
- When adding a Cyrillic domain to a hosting control panel, a DNS zone or a web server configuration.
- In SSL certificates — domains are written in them in Punycode.
- When an unreadable
xn--…entry shows up in server logs or emails and you need to find out which domain it is.
The converter follows the IDNA2008 standard (UTS #46), just like modern browsers. Want your own Cyrillic address? Register a domain in the .укр or .com.ua zone.
